Abode + Beyond: Pyrex

I. Love. Pyrex. I've loved it for years. In my 20's I loved the 70's avocado green color and patterns like Crazy Daisy or Spring Blossom. Currently I collect Shenandoah and pretty much any patterns I can find since the popularity has skyrocketed. I've even gotten my sister obsessed. After college in Lancaster PA she's drawn to the Amish-y pattern of Butterprint.

Part of the thrill of shopping for Pyrex is finding it "in the wild" (at a thrift shop or garage sale as opposed to online or in a antique shop). But I can definitely see the appeal of being able to find that one missing piece to you collection and with just a quick type of the keys you can find whatever you need.

Abode + Beyond: Forest Friendly

About 6 months ago I moved to Upstate New York from NYC. Even before I got here, I had a strong attraction to natural materials and an overall affinity for the outdoors in design. I'm not actually about to go camping. Trees, linens, stoneware, neutral colors, woods and woodland creatures like owls and deer just find their way into my aesthetic.

I've been trying to accumulate all sorts of things my style to include in my new (and MUCH larger) apartment. While I have a million little things to finish off the space, I really need to get my butt in gear about purchasing some furniture. I still don't have a couch. Yeah, you try owning a couch in a 5th floor walk-up studio in Brooklyn. I didn't think so.

Even though I've curbed my spending for the time being on decorative items for myself, I can still share!

Abode + Beyond: Embroider My Walls

I have come up with this brilliant plan to make an entire wall of art from vintage embroidered/needlepoint/crewel work pictures. Awesome, yes? I've been collecting framed gems the last few months and I'm hoping in a few more I will be able to put together a respectable obsession wall. I was originally inspired last year when I saw this totally amazing vintage Marushka wall on instagram.

Abode + Beyond: Afghan

I grew up grandmother-less as a child and I have these impressions of all the smotherly love I missed out on. Afghans give me that warm fuzzy feeling of grandmas and good books.

An afghan is a blanket, wrap, or shawl made of colored yarn. It is knitted or crocheted, often in geometric shapes. It can also be referred to as a "throw". Afghans were first made in Afghanistan and commonly featured geometric designs with many holes in the pattern. They are hand-stitched or knitted.[1] In North American craft tradition, afghans are draped over sofas or large chairs for decoration. - via Wikipedia

I love the look of a throw over the bottom of a perfectly made bed. Personally I prefer more muted colors and patterns, which I find are more rare. Seems grannies really loved to rainbow it up with their yarns.

This one is so beautifully understated in color and you can see how detailed it is with scalloped edges and different knits.

While this one is colorful, it's muted in almost pastel shades, plus it has such a light and airy, ethereal look to it. So delicately lovely.

Classic granny square in colors that will compliment decor instead of clash with it. You really have to check out the aniandrose shop if you're in the market for an afghan - it has the best ones on Etsy, in my opinion. All in great colors.

Abode & Beyond: Terra, terra, terra, terra, terra, terrarium

You come and go, you come and gooooooooooooooo. Ok, maybe I took the Culture Club play on words a little too far. Whatevs.

I have been drooling over terrariums for the last few months. My best friend is obsessed with gardening and planting, so maybe it's rubbing off on me. I'm also planning a move out of the city and to the country sometime in the next 6 to 9 months, so my desire for all things green has been growing inside of me. Pun intended.

There's a lot of interest in terrariums going around but I of course want the vintage goods!

Abode & Beyond: Kaj Franck

Vintage Scandinavian designers are among my absolute favorite in housewares and furniture. Probably why I love Ikea so much. But if it were up to me, I'd be able to afford all the vintage, better made stuff. Kaj Franck was a Finnish designer particularly famous for his work with Arabia and Finel.

Simple vintage can bowls go for over $100 each, so keep your eyes peeled at your local yard sales and thrift shops - never know when you might hit the jackpot!

Abode & Beyond: Acapulco

I've been using vintage kitchenware for years. Mismatched glasses, dishes, pots and pans, etc. Lately I've been looking to matching sets. I just know this is somehow related to me approaching 40... My recent purchase of the matching Otagiri tankards (coffee mugs, for me) and over the weekend I purchased my first full set of matching vintage drinking glasses. Simple clear highball glass with a beautiful white "lace" painted design.

Next on my list are a full set of vintage dishes. I've always loved the Acapulco line by Villeroy & Boch. Started in 1977, it has a distinct Mexican feel to it, hence the name. All that color! I've yet to ever spot any pieces in a thrift shop. The pieces are a collectors favorite so the prices are up there, especially for the older pieces. The pattern is still made, with changes over the years. Usually the newer they are the less busy they seem to be. Me? I love the older, full on, wild and crazy pattern. Perfect for display pieces. Amassing a full set would take years and/or a pretty penny but I can still swoon, can't I?
